Mothers

Last weekend my family had the chance to watch a bird build a nest right outside of our living room window in Brooklyn. It was amazing to watch as the bird flew back and forth collecting little branches that eventually turned into a home. Yesterday we noticed a blue egg in the nest and that the bird was sitting perched in there. We’re anxiously awaiting the next phase.

A friend of mine recently told me a story about two rabbits she had that she thought were both female. As it turns out though, one was in fact a male and I’m sure you can guess the end of this story. The fascinating thing though is that when the female rabbit went into labor (without my fried even knowing she was pregnant keep in mind!), she managed to use her body strength to force open her crate’s metal door, found the only room in the house with carpet, and built a nest for her babies by pulling out her own fur.

For those of you out there that are celebrating being a mother today - and that includes anyone who mothers, in any kind of way - we wish you a very Happy Mother’s day.
