This post is really about parenting, and not just mothering, but it felt like an appropriate day to write these thoughts. The other night at Hiho Batik we hosted an allergy awareness event that featured a reading by Susan Weissman, parent, advocate, and author of the inspiring memoir Feeding Eden, and Heidi Bayer, aka Brooklyn Allergy Mom and Board Member of Kids With Food Allergie s. Most of the attendees there were parents and the majority were mothers. While Susan and Heidi have slightly older children, a number of the people there had younger kids and were just beginning the journey towards getting a better understanding of what role allergies would play in their lives.

I’ve been reflecting on the discussion that took place because one thing that kept coming up was how much we as mothers (and fathers too) take on emotionally as we watch our children struggle with different things. The biggest take away for me that night was that once you become a parent, you really do become a member of a certain club and it’s so important that we be supportive of each other. We must check our judgements at the door because while not all of us deal with kids & allergies, I’m guessing we all deal with something that is unique to our child and therefore, can impact our mood and day.

When Hiho Batik opened we really wanted it to serve as a community space where people could connect. We envisioned parents doing projects with their kids, friends catching up with friends, strangers interacting with their neighbors, new moms gathering, kids birthday parties, and a million other combinations of people getting together in a cheerful and fun place. The other night really gave me the feeling of being part of something special and I can’t thank everyone enough for coming.

I have a question - did the month of March even exist this year? It’s strange because on the one hand, winter here in NYC seemed to drag on forever but on the other hand, it feels like March didn’t even happen. Even though it may appear as if we fell off the grid, I swear we were busy! To proof it, here are some pics of what we were up to….lots of birthday parties, an appearance in NY Mag, lots of make your owns, pop up at Chelsea Market, trade shows searching for good finds, craft fairs at local schools, trunk shows generously hosted by friends and family, more make your owns, spring break, spring inventory, oh, and then flat stanley came to visit for Easter ;)

DIY Mask Making Activity

Last Monday we hosted a Mask Making activity in collaboration with Mommy Poppins and it was a blast. We wanted the participants to understand the concept of batik so we used crayons and watercolors and it worked out great. This is such an easy & fun DIY activity that you can definitely do at home. Here’s what you need: white crayons, watercolors, paper masks, and some colorful items to glue on and you’re set. You start by decorating the masks with the white crayons and the wax from the crayon will resist the paint so you’ll get the batik effect. Then you can blot the masks a little so they dry quicker and you’re ready to add your accessories. We had kids of all ages participate and they each seemed to have a great time. We have a few left over masks hanging around the space and they are making for colorful looking wall art as well so…bonus!

One of the best parts of working at Hiho Batik is that we get to see how creative our neighbors can be. This week we just had to highlight this adorable baby set made at our Bump Baby Shower a few weeks ago. This was made by a soon-to-be grandmother for her soon-to-be grandson. So sweet!
